Paralympics sports officials had a hard time classifying athletes for their events at the Eko 2012 National Sports Festival.

This is because the participating States were desperate to have their athletes included, even as these athletes did not qualify to compete. However Paralympics committee director of technical, Mr. A. Lawal stated that the medical experts on ground have been able to sort out the classification after a torrid time.

“Classification was a problem. For instance in table tennis we have 10 categories, we have sitting and standing, but athletes who were not qualified sometimes wanted to compete and it was very difficult as the States wanted their athletes in.

“However, the experts were able to carry on the classification satisfactorily. This was done by accessing the muscle capacity of the athlete involved,” said the official.

He stated that competition has been going well after the classification palaver.
