ABUJA—Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has called for compassion among Nigerians, even as Senate President, David Mark described the security challenges in the country as surmountable.

They spoke, yesterday, at St. Mulumba Catholic Chaplaincy in Abuja during a holy Mass celebrated by the new Cardinal, John Onaiyekan

Mark said: “We are in a difficult situation but we will continue to pray and I know with prayer, honesty and the commitment of all of us, we can over come.

“We must not despair; we must be resolute to face the challenges.”
He noted that Cardinal Onaiyekan had remained humble, steadfast and dedicated, in spite of his elevation.

He urged him not to rest on his oars in the crusade for peace and unity of Nigeria, adding that the Cardinal had brought fame and honour to the nation.

Earlier in his homily from Mathew 15: 29 – 37, Cardinal Onaiyekan, who implored Nigerians, rich and poor, to have compassion on one another, said love and togetherness stood as panacea to the intractable conflicts across the country.
