OSOGBO – At least two persons were yesterday shot dead by armed robbers while five people sustained serious injuries during a bank robbery in Ikirun, headquarters of Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun state.
It was gathered that the bank robbery which lasted about 30 minutes could not be resisted by any security agent attached to the bank.
It was also learnt that the armed robbers numbering about six stormed the Ikirun branch of a new generation bank at about 4.00pm when the bank was preparing to close for the day and went away with an undisclosed amount of money.
An eye witness who preferred anonymity told our correspondent that the robbers upon arrival at the bank located at new Inisha road, Ikirun shot sporadically into the air to scare customers using the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of the bank.
It was gathered that the robbers eventually gained access into the bank and threatened to kill all the bank officials if they fail to co-operate with them.
The incident however threw the entire town into confusion as traders around the bank and others ran for safety while the operation lasted.
Also, drivers plying the Ikirun-Inisha road were prevented from plying the road, a situation which caused traffic jam in the heart of the town.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs Folashade Odoro who confirmed the incident to newsmen in a telephone conversation, said the state command of the Nigeria Police had deployed Police Officers to the town to calm the situation.
She said the Police are on top of the situation and assured that the situation would soon be brought under control.
