Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to start without delay, the paper work that will enable Sidney Sam to play for Nigeria.
The 24-year-old Sam of Nigerian and German parentage, had indicated his interest to play for his fatherland after representing German at the youth level. He is required to get clearance from the world soccer governing body, before he can switch allegiance.
It is now up to the NFF to start the process just like was done in the case of Victor Moses who also played for the England under 20 team.
“I want the process to start immediately. I’m excited to have such player commit to play for us,” said Keshi.
Coach Keshi had declared his interest to have the player when he took over as Eagles coach, but Sam who is enjoying a rich run of form with Bayer Leverkusen was non committal as he hoped for a call from the German senior team.
Keshi disclosed that he wouldn’t mind having the player for the Nations Cup: “Let us see what happens. If he is available to play we will take it from there,” added Keshi.
Sam confirmed in an interview with Kicker that he has held talks with the Eagles coach.
“There were intense discussions and I am keen to play for Nigeria,” Kicker quoted Sam as saying.
“The country (Nigeria) has a great football tradition, the team is full of good players.”
