The race for medals at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival got more interesting yesterday when the host state, Lagos joined the gold rush, bagging her second gold medal in as many days.
Spectators at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports hall erupted in ecstasy when Elisha Egbe won gold in taekwondo. The event was Poomsae form where he defeated other contenders from Delta and Edo.
In a chat with Sports Vanguard, Egbe who hails from Ebonyi State said he was happy winning the gold medal for his adopted state. “I am happy because it is in fulfillment of what I pledged to my coach.”
Egbe who won silver in the same event at the last sports festival in Port Harcourt said the medal was as a result of the motivation he got from the state Sports Council.
“In terms of motivation, Lagos State ranks tops. We were adequately motivated because, if it is about hard work alone, other states also worked hard. I thank God for Lagos,” the gold medalist said.
He said he had no qualms representing Lagos because he had spent all his life in Lagos. “I grew up here, so I am a Lagosian.”
Opeyemi Aramide also representing Lagos won a bronze medal in takwondo also in Poomsae, female category
Lagos had earlier won one gold, one silver and one bronze in judo.
