Super Falcons nemesis, Jannie Van Wyk says Bayana Bayana of South Africa are not bothered by the strong showing of the the Equatorial Guinean team in the Africa Women Championship, AWC, which comes to an end today.
Van Wyk scored the important goal that stopped the defending champions, Super Falcons on their tracks. She declared that having beaten Nigeria, the 2008 champions will not stop Banyana Banyana from picking their first AWC title.
The hosts beat South Africa in the 2008 final and as the two sides meet today in the 2012 final at the same venue, Van Wyk stated that statistics will not play any role in the game. The South African women have lost all three matches they played against Equatorial Guinea.
“Yes, they beat us again in the opening game of this tournament. But that won’t matter. Obviously we were still warming up for the event and coming to terms with the conditions. We’re in high spirits now and we will go into the final with the same spirit we had against Nigeria.”
Van Wyk believes this year was pre-ordained to be theirs.
“I really believe 2012 was just meant to be our year. First we made history by going to the Olympics, now we’ve finally beaten Nigeria. I believe we can come back home with the cup. We will be African champions.”
Nigeria and Cameroon will play the third place match before the final at the same venue. When both sides met in the group stage, the Falcons won 2-1.
