Bishop Okonkwo harps on the need for quality education

BY DAYO ADESULU

The Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo has said that  for any nation to attain  true and holistic development, the need to have a qualitative education system cannot be over emphasized, saying that education is the bedrock of the economic, social and political development of a nation.

Speaking through the Corporate Affairs Officer, Mr Olarewaju Fabiyi, said in a release: “To complement government efforts to address the menace of poor reading and writing that have resulted in poor performance of Nigerian students in their examinations, TREM has since 2004 established an Annual Essay Competition in honour of Dr. Mike Okonkwo the presiding Bishop to celebrate his birthday.”

According to him, this year’s edition will be 9th in the series and the topic is “Dependence of The Nigerian Economy on Crude Oil: Any Alternatives”.  Entry opens on Monday, March 26th 2012 and closes on Sunday, May 27th 2012.  All entries are to be submitted to TREM Headquarters either by post or by e-mail, to essay@trem.org.

Apart from serving as a tool to encourage reading and writing, Olarewaju noted that the essay competition has helped participating students develop interest in research work, extensive reading, constructive writing and  make contributions on issues significant to the socio-economic development of our nation. “Most of the winners in the last 8 years have gone on to win other awards, both locally and internationally,” he said

“The competition has also contributed towards Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) development in  schools, especially in government owned schools through the donation of computers to winning schools. Over the years, winners have emerged from both government owned and private schools as winners have always been encouraged with gifts both in kind and cash. This has helped some of the students to excel in their university education.”

He noted that the prizes have been reviewed upwards as follows:
First Prize: – 3 Internet ready desktop Computers and Printers will be given to the winner’s school while the student will be given a cash prize of N100, 000.00 and a Laptop.

Second Prize: – 2 Internet ready Computers and a printer will be given to the school and N75, 000.00 to the student.

Third Prize: – Internet ready computer will be given to the school and the student will be given N50, 000.00 cash.
Prizes will be presented to the winners during Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture scheduled for September 5th 2012 at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Lagos.
