Governorship candidate of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Bayelsa State, Mr. Kemela Okara, yesterday, said that of all the aspirants jostling for the position, he was a better candidate to govern the state.

Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, Okara said an ACN government in the state would usher in the transformation that every Bayelsan can trust, adding that since the creation of the state in 1991, the major challenge facing it was failure of “compassionate leadership that recognises that if you are given authority, it is meant to be people-centred.”

He said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which has been in power in the state in the last 12 years had impoverished it, adding that with all the resources in the state, it was still backward and grossly underdeveloped.

On beating the PDP candidate, Mr Seriake Dickson, who was being backed by the Presidency and federal might, Okara said “Dickson, presidency and federal might are not God. They cannot usurp the power of the people to get what they want. First and foremost, when you look at Mr. President’s emergence as president, nobody gave him a chance, but he rose from being Deputy Governor to Governor, Vice President and now President.

“That speaks of divine providence because God rules in the affairs of men. So, no man can arrogate to himself the power to determine what happens in any place. That would simply be pride and as such, a short-sighted approach to the way things happen in the affairs of men.

“It is the people who would decide and this election will be one election which would shock many people because Bayelsans are sick and tired of people, who feel they can just toy with their destinies.”

Bayelsans are rising and saying they are not going to mortgage their future on the altar of somebody’s ego or pride.”

He added that he joined the governorship race because the people of the state have been groaning and expressing their desire change.

“People are concerned about their human condition. They know that a party may be in power for 20 years, but if at the end of the day it has nothing to show for it, would they not look for an alternative? Bayelsa State has had the same party in power for 12 years. Meanwhile, the state with all its resources is still very backward,” he added.
