Trouble looms as land speculators invade Wastex millenium estate

BY ISHOLA BALOGUN

Trouble is looming around the Wastex Millenium Estate, Gbagada, Lagos as suspected land speculators lay seige to some portion of land in the area claiming ownership. The areas in dispute were said to be owned by Alashe, Oloto and Adams/Esu families following a out-of-court settlement and agreement reached between the families and government of Lagos state sometimes in November 2004 after the Lagos State government had acquired part of the land for the Millennium Housing Scheme.

Speaking on behalf of Adams family, Alhaji Taiwo Shodunke said government released part of the land to the three families but some miscreants have been preventing the family from gaining access to the land.

Shodunke who is the Secretary to Adams family said: “In 2001, we bought the land and sold part of it to Diya Fatimilehin Properties, but shortly after then, the Lagos state government aquired the land and two other families who also own some portions were joined in the suit.

They are Adams, Alashe and Oloto families. After sometime, we were asked through our counsel to settle out of court and we did and part of the land were released to us by the government. But in 2003-2007, a man (name withheld) invaded the land using law enforcement agents to intimidate people.”

He continued: “The Oloto family engaged a prominent woman and proprietor of a popular Muslim school in the area (name withheld) but she turned against the families preventing our family from going into the site which belongs to us. When our people went to site to begin work, they were harassed and threathened saying the land beongs to Oloto family.

Inspite of showing them document which partitioned and delineated the released portion for each of the families, they refused, going as far as using the police to intimidate us,” he stressed.

He however noted that the despite the threat messages Adams family has received to stay away from the portion of land, the family will not succumb to it but use all legal means to claim their property.

According to the terms of settlement, it reads in part: “By the agreement of the families and Diya Fatimilehin & Associates, the released portion of the land is hereby partitioned and Adams/Esu families (1st – 4th claimant) are alloted 6741.891 square meters of the released land which is more particularly described and delineated on survery Plan No. LA/1356/055C/2004”

Alhaji Shodunke called on Governor Babatunde Fashola to wade into the matter urgently as the speculators are bent on inflicting terror on land owners and their agents on site in order to avert crisis in the area just as he said the matter state CID Panti, Yaba is investigating the story.

He stated that the family had earlier sought police protection in the past towards the development of the land belonging to them but to no avail, adding that the miscreants still go about unleashing terror on agents and representatives of the family on site.

“We pettitioned the police informing them on how these land speculators including a prominent woman who runs a Muslim school in the area molested and harrased us claming she had the ‘Power of Anthony’ from HRM Oba Ganiyu Adesanya,” he said.
