SENATOR George Sekibo of the Peoples Democratic Party has been declared winner of Thursday’s Rivers East Senatorial election in Rivers State.
He polled 472,224 votes to beat the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, A.C.N, Lasbery Amadi who got 18,109.
Meantime, the ACN has rejected the result of the election. A statement from the state publicity secretary of the party, Mr Jerry Needam alleged that the election was massively rigged in Ogu Bolo, ObioAkpor, Port Harcourt and Emohua Local Government by those the statement described as agents of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The statement also alleged that the PDP connived with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to rig the election.
“We hereby reject the result announced by the INEC today. The result doesn’t represent the will of the people in the Rivers East Senatorial district, who were willing to make a change following the disgraceful performance of the PDP candidate in the senate over the years.
We will challenge the result of the Rivers East Senatorial Re-run election announced today by INEC in the Election Petition Tribunal.” Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the senatorial district, Dr Otu Ekpenyong declared Senator Sekibo winner of the election.
According to him, twelve political parties participated in the exercise. It would be recalled that the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt ordered a rerun election based on a petition by a candidate of one of the political parties challenging omission of his parties name and logo in the voting materials for the election last year.
