UGHELLI—No fewer than three persons, were feared dead in a fatal motor accident in Ughelli, Delta State, along the East-West Road, weekend.
The accident, which occurred at about 7:30pm, Saturday, involved two cars. They were involved in a head-on collusion, claiming the lives of all three occupants of the Honda Accord. The car went up in flames as a result of the accident.
An eye witness said the only survivor of the crash was the driver of the other car, Volkswagen car, heading in Warri direction, adding that the Volkswagen Vento drove against traffic.
The witness, who gave his name as Patrick Akpofure, a commercial motorcyclist, said he was returning home when he saw the Honda Accord car on fire, adding that on getting close, he saw that it was an accident involving two cars.
He said: “When some other persons and I got to the scene of the accident, we tried to rescue occupants of the Honda Accord car, including a woman on the back seat, who was calling for help. Suddenly, the fuel tank of the car exploded, as we were trying to help out.
“With the explosion, we could not get close to the car and the victims were roasted to death while we watched helplessly. We were able to rush the driver of the Volkswagen Vento car under critical condition in a motorcycle to the hospital.”
Efforts to reach the head of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Ughelli and the Divisional Police Officer, Ughelli ‘A’ Police Division, proved abortive at press time.
However, a senior police officer in the division confirmed the incident, adding that the police had directed the traffic section to look into it.
