Oluwatola, Lawal emerge WAEC best

MASTER Akinwale Oluwatola and Miss Olaitan Ibironke Lawal have emerged as the best candidates in the May/June 2010 WASSCE in Nigeria.

While Master Oluwatola scored in 8 best subjects including English Language and Mathematics scoring a total of 650,2304, Miss Ibironke also scored in 8 best subjects including English language and Mathematics and have 641,4004 points.

The exam body also gave trophies to the schools that produced the best male and female candidates in the same period including the Omo N’Oba Erediauwa Coronation trophies and the Augustus Bandele Oyediran.

The Distinguish /Merit awards were presented to the candidates in Benin yesterday during the opening ceremony of the 49th Annual meeting of the Nigeria National Committee [NNC].

The male winner, Akinwale Oluwatola is of Airforce Comprehensive School, Iyana Offa, Oyo State while the first prize female winner, Lawal Olaitan Ibironke finished from the Oritamefa Baptist Model School, Total Garden, Ibadan, Oyo State

Chairman, Nigeria National Committee [NNC] of WAEC, Mrs. Mabel Ozurumba who made the presentation said that the objective behind the awards was to encourage the youth to strive for excellence in the pursuit.

She noted that having witnessed the ceremony, most of the youths present would be challenged to work harder in order to win similar laurels in future.

Similarly, the examination body also gave long service awards to 69 members of its staff in Nigeria who have served the organisation meritoriously for 20 years without blemish.

According to Mrs. Ozurumba, the awards were the council’s way of expressing appreciation and gratitude to dedicated staff who have contributed to the success of WAEC.

“The staff who are to be honoured today have had to endure difficult terrain and circumstances, sometimes at the risk their lives, to carry out the council’s assignments in Nigeria, she said, adding that posterity would continue to appreciate their immense contributions to the sustenance of standards and the development of education in the country.

Earlier in his opening remark, the Head, Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae disclosed that the committee was the highest decision making body who ensured that the policies of the councils in Nigeria are decided in the best interest, and appropriate decisions.
