UYO – Kidnappings, armed robbery, murders and violent crimes in Akwa Ibom State are in the decline as the new Police Commissioner, Solomon Arase, has ordered 24-hour patrol of all vulnerable spots in the state.
Criminal activities in Akwa Ibom had led to so many persons fleeing the state to neighbouring Cross River State and companies folding up or packing out.
However, with the push by the new police boss, Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded the smashing of more than 40 syndicates of various criminal gangs with items recovered, victims rescued, fire-arms and ammunition recovered.
One criminal hideout was discovered in Abak Usidim Village in Abak Local Government Area. Police operatives swooped in and after two hours of gun battle, the hoodlums were overpowered and two of them killed.
Further search of the area led to the arrest of two others (names withheld) and recovering of arms and ammunition, national identity card, ATM cards, voter’s card, mobile phones, charger, a bag of clothes, eight thousand naira, and other items.
Akwa Ibom State Police Command said the suspects will be arraigned in court after the completion of investigation, assuring that adequate yuletide security measures are already in place for crime-free celebrations.
The command urged members of the public to report any strange or suspicious movement or activity to the Police.
