Rector flays unbridled award

OSOGBO-The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State, Dr. Joseph Oke has decried perceived indiscriminate award of honourary Doctorate Degrees and Fellowship by Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics to undeserving people for material gains.

At a briefing on activities marking the 7th convocation ceremony of the institution yesterday in Ede, the Rector who gave reasons why the institution was not giving any honourary fellowship award this year, said only people who distinguished themselves in their chosen careers deserves to be given such awards.

His words: “we decided not to give any fellowship award this year because we feel strongly about the mass incessant awards of honourary degrees and fellowships as are in the case of many Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics. The management of this polytechnic felt ideally that awards of fellowship should only be given to people who have made contributions in their chosen carriers to our national development in their various endowments.”

Prominent Nigerians including the Minister of Education Professor Ruqquayat Rufai, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, Commissioners, traditional rulers are expected to grace the grand finale slated for tomorrow.
