Okolo makes case for tech driven economy

The immediate past National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) Dr. Simon Chukwuemeka Okolo, said, Tuesday, science and technology education is critical for the attainment of government’s vision 20-20-20.

“Science and Technology has made the difference between African countries and other developed economies of the world. For example Japan has no oil but has been able to harness its prowess in science and technology to become one of the leading economies of the world,” he said.

MFR has decried the continuing decay in the standards of education in the country especially as it affects science laboratory Technology studies which hold s the key to rapid industrial development of nations.

He was of the view that despite the country’s wealth in natural resources, we lack the capabilities to harness these resources, pointing out that such capabilities can only be gotten through science and technology education.

He, therefore, called on the presidency, to pay adequate and close attention to the activities of the Science and Technology Ministry by providing it with the necessary funds to get its policies off the ground. He believes that if can harness, develops and utilises science and technology initiatives to build knowledge- based, industrialised and self reliant and competitive economy.

He further called for the collaboration of the government and private sector in science and technology initiative in order to ensure market driven researches are embarked upon to avoid situations of research products lying in shelf instead of being commercialised.
