With the year running out fast, athletics officials are still waiting on the sponsors of the Lagos International Half Marathon to back up their commitment to revamp the event, which was last held in 2008.
Earlier in the year telecom giants, Globacom renewed its interest to sponsor the event after the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN terminated a previous contract it signed with the company. After a fence mending talk in Lagos, both parties pledged to organise the race this year.
However, checks revealed that there is no activity to suggest that the race will be back on track. But a spokesman of the company insisted during the week that it was still possible to run the race this year, adding that preparations would soon begin.
“In fact, as you are talking to me, I’m just drafting a working document. We would soon come out with a statement. But right now I cannot give a specific date we would have the race in Lagos, but I can tell you that it will hold this year,” said the official.
