LAGOS—Two policemen attached to Owutu Police Division in Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area of Lagos, have been shot dead by robbers.
The no fewer than five robbers also made away with three rifles belonging to the policemen.
The policemen, it was gathered, were on a stop and search routine job at Agric bus-stop, when they were attacked at about 11pm, Tuesday.
Eye witnesses said the policemen had flagged down a Murano jeep and directed the driver to put on his inner light. Unknown to them, the occupants of the vehicle, were suspected members of a robbery gang, who had earlier snatched two vehicles from their owners.
Other members of the gang reportedly drove in a Toyota Camry car, which was directly behind the jeep.
Apparently thinking the policemen had got wind of their earlier operation, the robbers opened fire, taking the policemen unaware.
Another version of the attack said the robbers walked up to the three policemen, who were seated and opened fire on them, killing two on the spot while the third ran for safety, abandoning his rifle.
It was gathered that patrol team, which arrived the scene gave the robbers a chase, but without luck.
When information of the attack was received at Owutu Division, policemen from other divisions under Area ‘N’ reportedly blocked all routes in and out of the area in search of the gunmen.
When contacted, yesterday, the command spokesman, Mr Samuel Jinadu, said he was aware of the incident, promising to contact the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of the area.
