UGHELLI—Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Pius Ewherido, weekend, promised scho-larship awards to 50 indigent students of Urho-bo origin in tertiary institu-tions across the eight local government areas of the district.

He also promised to award scholarship to 32 students of Urhobo extrac-tion in the Department of Languages and Linguistics in Delta State University, Abraka, for the promotion of Urhobo language which, according to him, was going into extinction.

Ewherido, who appointed liaison officers in each of the eight local government areas, decried the poor manner of speaking Urhobo language by the present generation of Urhobo people.

He said: “Beneficiaries must be those who cannot afford to pay to acquire tertiary education. We do not want the Urhobo language to go into extinction.”

Ewherido also disclosed that 80 women would benefit from the empowerment scheme.

He said: “Most of the empowerment for women will be in the area of training. Some of them will undergo training overseas.”

Beneficiaries of the various programmes cut across the eight local government areas that make up Delta Central Senatorial District.”

“The scholarship we are awarding in conjunction with Department of Languages and Linguistics in Delta State University is aimed at promoting the Urhobo language.”
