The newly-appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, in-charge of Zone 3, John Morenike, has said that the police needed special funding to enable the force function effectively.
Morenike spoke in an interview with newsmen in Gombe shortly after paying a familiarisation visit to the state Police Command.
The AIG acknowledged the efforts of the Federal Government in combating crimes in the country but stated that the rising wave of criminal activities across the country required a new approach which he said involved proper funding of the police.
He acknowledged the porous security situation in the country, bemoaning the situation whereby the police lacked scientific ways of combating crime which has made crime fighting more difficult.
According to him, the installation of Closed Circuit Cameras, CCC, in some major cities and towns would reduce the crime wave, stressing that no meaningful impact would be made in an atmosphere of insecurity.
Morenike also met with the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, in the state where he reiterated that “security is everybody’s business.” He later visited Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo at the Government House.
He commended Dankwambo for the logistics support from his administration which has helped the police maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the state. He enjoined the governor not to relent in his efforts.
