The Cross River State government has established anti-violence against women committee to reduce incidences of violence against women and girl child battering.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Ekama Awara who disclosed this in Calabar said that the committee is aimed at reducing cases of wife battering, rape, widowhood maltreatment, incest and other forms of violence against women common in the society.
She said the committee is working with the state legal instruments and the Federation of International Women Lawyers, FIDA, to curb feminized violence in the state, adding that a preliminary training has been organized on the basic concepts of mainstreaming for gender desk officers in all ministries, departments and agencies to mainstream gender component into programmes, adding that the objective is to ensure gender equality and parity in development in the state.
