Victor Adetunji Haffner has paid his dues in the building and construction engineering. He is our guest of this edition of Celebrity Tummy Talk. He says, no woman can defeat him in cooking even at 92 years old.
As a widower, who cooks for you?
When I was growing up, my mother used to send me to the market during weekends. Particularly, on Sundays, I was compelled to do all the cooking. After our Sunday service, I would cook two different delicacies for the family. My mother used to eat amala (yam flour) and ewedu with beef and pork meat while we enjoyed our rice and stew.
I was a choir-boy in the Church and a cook at home. And I can tell you that I got the best training in cooking from my mother.
What kind of food were you eating while growing up?
I ate all sorts of food. In fact, I ate both Nigerian and Continental foods. I’ve travelled round the world and I tried every cuisine globally, including Chinese, Japanese, American and French. I think French cuisine is preferable to the English.
Do you exercise?
I used to exercise. Swimming was my hobby and I have a swimming pool in my house. But I don’t swim any more, rather, I stroll round the Estate.
What do you drink?
I used to drink very heavily when I was young. All sorts of brands. Right now, I drink beer and white wine. I don’t drink soft drinks but water. Pure water is pure death and you have to be very careful with that.
What does it do to you?
Makes me fine good. Sometimes, I take red wine too but I prefer the white wine. And I don’t drink Whiskey again.
… On a weekend?
I go to church.
Do you still go to parties?
Yes but not many parties.

can you help me with the best meal for type 2 diabetics? Thank you in anticipation of your response.
Ola from Benin City
Eating well is one of the pleasures of life. If you have type 2 diabetes, you don’t have to forgo the enjoyment of food. You just have to adapt and change your eating habits and, maybe, some of the foods you eat.
Fruit and vegetables are usually good choices, but be careful not to eat too much fruit. Check with your dietitian to see how much is recommended. Non-starchy vegetables are a good choice. These include spinach, carrots, broccoli, and green beans.
Eat whole-grain foods, such as brown rice and whole wheat pasta. Include legumes like lentils, kidney, or pinto beans in your meal plans. Choose fish over meat two to three times a week.
For meat, choose lean pork or beef, or chicken or turkey with the skin removed. Dairy (cheese, yogurt, milk) is important, but go for non-fat versions, even for ice cream.
But you can do away with sodas which are chock-full of sugar, as are fruit punches and other sugar-sweetened drinks. So opt for diet drinks or water. Sugary snacks (cookies, cakes, chips, ice cream) fill you up with empty calories. Choose healthier snack options instead.
