Abuja – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has only invited home for consultations the country’s  High Commissioner to Kenya, Amb. Chijioke Wigwe.

Wigwe had been under fire lately after being accused of wife battery.

“He was not recalled, but invited home on consultations following allegations of wife battery,’’ the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Martin Uhoimoibhi, said.

He said  that the matter was under investigation and that appropriate action would be taken on the basis of the outcome of the consultations.

“There is a difference between an invitation and a recall. He has not been recalled, he is still the ambassador to Kenya,’’ the Permanent Secretary said

He said officials in the Foreign Affairs ministry were already meeting on the issue in line with the ministry’s stipulated due process.

Uhoimoibhi also said the envoy’s diplomatic waiver had not been withdrawn, insisting that no decision had yet been taken by the ministry.

The  news and pictures relating to the alleged wife battery were published in a local newspaper in Kenya last week, while the envoy and his son Nelson had also granted interviews.

The interviews granted by Uhoimoibhi and his son followed the earlier one granted by his wife, Mrs Tessy Wigwe.

Wigwe who was posted to Kenya in 2008 is also Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme, and was also accredited to the Republic of Seychelles, and Oversees Somalia.(NAN)
