What is the idea behind Women Talking to Women initiative?

•Mrs Chioma Isiguzo

It focuses on food and why women should take their rightful place when it comes to healthy living for their families. They should know that it is not food that matters but the life of the food. They must know the importance of a particular food before preparing the same for the members of their families.

We have to ensure that our families eat healthy. Women are duty bound to remain informed on a regular basis in respect of the need for their families to cultivate an enduring eating habit.

How did you start the project?

I started by cultivating a vegetable farm so that people can have access to clean vegetables. Since our health is most important, it is not how cheap vegetables are but how healthy they are. Some of the fruits people buy have been infected with flies because they have been exposed.

We are trying to create awareness for people to learn to buy vegetables in a clean place. Women are home keepers and so, it is important for them to know that going to the market requires wisdom and they must encourage their children to eat well.

We need more women to practicalise agriculture. A lot of women want to venture into agriculture but don’t know how. Some women don’t know what to do and so, they hawk around the streets. We are also targeting the less privileged. We want to let them know that they have a future. When it comes to eating healthy, every woman should know that catching their children young is the best thing to do. We don’t have to wait till they grow up and develop some sickness before searching for cure. This is the time.

A lot of children like junk food and some parents are encouraging it. Women make the excuse that they are busy and leave their responsibilities. So, Women Talking to Women is an avenue to teach women to organise their homes and have the time to keep their children healthy. And starting early is advisable. If men are busy chasing money, women should have the time to cook right.
