Etisalat promotes career path for Secondary School Students

As part of its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility in the area of educational development in the country, Etisalat Nigeria , recently organised its second Career Counselling Session for students in three secondary schools in Lagos . The schools; Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School, Kuramo Senior College and Victoria Island Senior Secondary School sent in large numbers of students in their SSS1 and SSS2 classes to benefit from the all day career counselling session. Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School is one of the schools adopted for life by Etisalat under its partnership with the Save Our Schools initiative of the Lagos State Government.
At the counselling session, students were exposed to detailed information required to guide their decision and career paths in professional disciplines such as Human Resources, Project Management and Accountancy. The presentations by the trio of Chike Otubelu, Anthonia Attoh and Charles Sanwo, all staff of Etisalat, provided practical information of the various professions and explained requirements the students need to meet in order to be able to undertake the professions as courses of study in higher institutions of learning.

Speaking at the occasion, Etisalat Director Government Relations and Regulatory Affairs, Ibrahim Dikko said that the career counselling was part of its CSR initiatives spanning education, health and the environment. He reiterated that the career counselling provides Etisalat employees the opportunity to influence the society positively through knowledge and skills impartation.
According to him, “The career counselling scheme is our commitment to internal CSR. It allows our staff volunteer their time for the purpose of career counselling to impart knowledge through guiding and counselling these young people in this key formative period. It is also our way of restating our brand values of caring, optimism and simplicity to Nigerian youths.”
Dikko however, acknowledged the support of the Lagos State Empowerment and Resource Network (LEARN), an NGO founded by the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, for continuous partnership on the scheme.
In her comment, the Tutor General and Permanent Secretary for Education in Lagos State , Alhaja M.W Idris commended Etisalat for pioneering the Adopt–a–School initiative and for collaborating with LEARN thereby heeding the call for Public Private Partnership. She pointed to Etisalat as a good example of a responsible corporate organization adding that the counselling sessions will provide unique opportunities for youths to learn from those who understand the challenges of their generation.
LEARN Project Manager, Mrs. Bisi Awoyomi, said that the NGO aims to groom young leaders by equipping them with the necessary information to make informed decisions.
