As the debate rages globally on whether or not to legalize abortion, the Catholic Order of the Knights of St. Mulumba, KSM, Maryland Sub-council, Lagos says it would not relent in its campaign on the sacredness of human life and would do all it can to stay strong in the battle against abortion.
Speaking at an interactive seminar organised by the sub-council for students of Command Day Secondary School, Army Cantonment, Maryland, Ikeja under the theme, Life Is a Gift From God, Protect It, the guest speaker, Mrs. Harriet Ogbobine, counselling coordinator, Doctors Health Initiative, described abortion as an evil act that must be fought to a standstill.
According to her, to put an end to the scourge, enlightenment campaigns should continuously be focused on teenage groups, who are inundated by the campaign of many pro-choice groups and very vulnerable to the disorientating global arguments on legalization of abortion.
With the theme of this year’s pro-life campaign, she assured that the minds of many, especially teenagers, would be opened to see abortion as evil and to look at life as a gift, and not an inconvenience.
Asked whether it might be right to abort a baby conceived by a victim of rape, Ogbobine said: “If we are looking at somebody who was raped, killing or aborting the child does not actually convince the victim.
The rape itself has to be dealt with but, if the person is now encouraged because of the circumstance surrounding that pregnancy to take the life of the innocent unborn child, that does not justify it because the child in question has the right to live as life is sacred and must not be tampered with”.
