ABUJA — NEWLY elected members of the House of Representatives vowed yesterday that they would use their numerical strength to upturn the present zoning arrangement of the emergence of principal officers for the House.
Addressing journalists yesterday in Abuja, Convener/Chairman of the 7th Assembly Group, Abdulmumin Jibrin, member-elect for Kiru Bebeji Federal Constituency, Kano said they have also agreed to aspire and support anyone from their fold for Speaker, Deputy Speaker positions and other principal officers of the House leadership as stipulated in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, section 50(1) (B) ‘’there shall be a Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives who shall be elected by the members of that House from amongst themselves.”
According to Jibrin, the threat would be successful against the backdrop that as first time members-elect, they are 266 in number representing 75 per cent of the entire House of the of the yet to be constituted 7th Assembly.
The new members also said as part of moves to actualise their present campaign, they have hired the services of three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, to take up law suits against the House rules that prevent first term members from contesting the position of Speaker, Deputy Speaker and other principal officers of the House.
