Edo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Iziegbe Anita Evbuomwan, has enjoined Edo athletes to be goal driven in their preparations for the National Sports Festival (NSF)0 in Port Harcourt.
Speaking after an inspection of athletes and equipment in readiness for the NSF, the Commissioner expressed satisfaction that the state is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that it comes out in flying colours during the competition.
“We have started intensive training and in a few weeks, our athletes will be camped in order to enable us select the best for the festival”, Hon. Evbuomwan added.
Debunking the allegations that the state did not provide alterative training facilities for those sports association that can not use the pitch anymore as a result of the Astroturf, the Commissioner said that facilities have been provided at Emotan Grammar School for Juvelin, Throws, among others before the installation of the turf.
In the case of swimming, Hon. Evbuomwan noted that though the Olympic size pool is under construction, the learners’ pool has long been completed and serves as an alternative, noting that it was same pool the swimmers used in preparation for the 2009 Sports Festival in Kaduna and did very well.
According to the Commissioner “if our athletes continue training with the zeal and commitment I just saw at the stadium, I make bold to say that we shall come out tops at the end of the festival in PortHarcourt’.
