Senior and junior workers of Eagle Bulk Cement Company in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, last weekend, carried placards, demonstrating and seeking the investigation of its former Managing Director.
Specifically, the chemical and non-metallic products workers union wants the management of the place to ask the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe the former management because of the alleged illicit financial dealings in the company. Chairman of the union Comrade Simeon Onyeama told journalist that the workers had not received their entitlements and many benefits since 2000, because of the oppressive policies and the poor handling of the affairs of the company .
“Many of our workers have been unjustifiable laid off in the last 10 years while those who retired voluntarily have not been paid their gratuity in the past five years”, stating, such act of management should be probed to explain how it handled matters. The period of stewardship had been characterised by continuous management and workers friction and we could not have continued going back, there is the need to go forward.
