The man making sure Nigeria is adequately represented is Lexy Mojo Eyes, who is unarguably Nigeria’s fashion Ambassador. He re-invented the Nigerian fashion industry over 16 years ago by creating the first national platform – The Nigeria Fashion Show for Nigerian designers to excel. That was the platform that was used to re-orient Nigerian designers to look inward to all local fabrics, accessories and designs in their production line. According to Lexy then ‘If we must compete effectively globally, then we must be able to present products that are unique to the international fashion industry.’
With the Nigeria Fashion Show, Lexy Mojo Eyes campaigned for Nigerians to patronize the local Nigerian fashion industry. He made Nigerians fall in love in wearing Nigerian clothes with the slogan: Nigeria Fashion Show says, wear Nigerian stuff. In the last 13 years that the Nigeria Fashion Show has been held, dress code has been strictly Nigerian. In 2000, his company Legendary Gold Limited, took 10 Nigerian designers to the World’s fashion capital, Paris, where for the first time the Nigerian fashion industry was put on the international fashion spotlight. Every year after then, he has taken Nigerian designers to Paris, Milan, New York, London, Rome, Dubai, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg, Cape Town etc
In December 2003, his outfit, Legendary Gold Limited signed a franchise contract in Paris with the international global television channel, Fashion TV. This contract included the rights to stage The Fashion TV Model Awards in Nigeria in 2004.
Also in 2004, Legendary Gold Limited signed a contract to secure the rights for the New York based Ford Supermodel of the World contest.
In 2005, Legendary Gold Limited was appointed by the Federal Ministry of Information and Communications to produce fashion shows as part of the Heart of Africa project. The fashion shows were organised in Washington DC, Atlanta and Houston.
In 2007, Legendary Gold Limited got Nigeria endorsed as the 41st member country of the World Fashion Organization.
When Nigeria and South Africa celebrated 10 years of Bi-National Commission and diplomatic relationship in 2009, Legendary Gold that was employed by the office of Vice President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan (now the President of Nigeria)to produce the Nigerian/South African fashion show tagged ’’Fashionably Loud’’ which was broadcast on MTV Base. It featured top Nigerian and South African designers and models. It was held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.
Legendary Gold also staged the Benue and Bayelsa Fashion Weeks with the First Ladies of Both States. The goal was to empower young creative individuals in the area of fashion and modeling.
‘’What have you been up to? You seem to be hardly around these days’’, We asked him when we recently caught up with him.
‘’I moved my operations to California and Paris since in the last 2 years. Apart from Legendary Gold’s projects, I now have more responsibilities especially with my involvement with World Fashion Council/World Fashion Organization. I have busier schedules now. My constituency is no longer Nigeria alone, but the whole of the African continent.’’
Following his contribution to the growth and development of fashion in Nigeria and the African continent, Lexy was 2 years ago appointed into the International Committee of the California based World Fashion Council/World Fashion Organization. He is one of two Africans so appointed. The World Fashion Organization is the regulatory body for the international fashion industry. “It is to fashion what FIFA is to football”. Also, Lexy happens to be the only African in the core committee that is planning and executing the first World Fashion Week.
Lexy says :‘’Despite the stringent conditions of becoming a member country of the World Fashion Organization, one of the things I want to achieve as a member of the International Committee is to help as many African countries as possible to be part of the world fashion governing body. This is because there is a lot to benefit from it in terms of commerce and networking. Member countries’ clothing industries benefits a lot of foreign exchange, and this I hope will help poverty alleviation drive in Africa.’’
Right now, only 3 African countries have been admitted as members of the world’s fashion governing body. They are South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.
When asked what he thinks about all his achievements, he says :‘’I don’t think I have achieved much. There is so much more to do. As far as I am concerned, we have just gotten started. Until I see Nigerian labels in top ready -to-wear shops in the high streets of Paris, Milan, London, New York and Japan, then I can say we have achieved sometime. Right now, we are trying to get there,’’ he concludes.
Legendary Gold Limited annually organizes The Nigeria Model Awards, the Nigeria Fashion Week, The Nigeria Fashion Show and the Nigeria Fashion Awards.
