Veteran sports administrator, Reverend Moses Iloh has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to appoint a credible person as sports minister in the next dispensation.
He said for one to be appointed sports minister, his background must be investigated. “He must be running a reputable family life, his involvement with youth organizations must be investigated, and he must be credible and must get a clear mandate to develop the Nigerian youth through sports.
Speaking on the state of sports in the country, Iloh, a one time chairman of the Nigeria Cycling Federation said, “I think the entire philosophy of sports should be revisited. The new sports philosophy should be based on the development of the youth because when you develop talents that translates to money, employment and prosperity,” adding, “sports will bring down poverty, promote a healthy society and bring about a disciplined society. No sports man sees a contest as a do or die affair.”
The renowned sports administrator rubbished the conscessioning exercise which has seen some sports handed over to private hands to run.
Instead, Ilo suggested that government should encourage the various companies to run sports clubs and such companies must enjoy tax rebate from government.
“Concessioning, or whatever they call it is a hostile attitude towards our youth. They only concession those sports they cannot steal from,” he said, asking, “Why don’t they concession football?”
Reverend Ilo dismissed the administration of football in the country as “crass irresponsibility,” deposing that the way the sport was run gave rise to the so_called parallel NFA, which he did not support.
