Cape Town (South Africa)  – The Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU) is taking its campaign to tackle high-level corruption, badly-negotiated contracts and the fight against ‘Vulture Funds’ to Southern Africa.

The capacity-building Seminar for commercial lawyers scheduled to hold from May  25 to 27 in Cape Town is entitled “the Southern African Regional Seminar on Complex International Commercial Negotiation and Litigation”.

It marks the second round of a continent-wide initiative to develop the experience and expertise of African lawyers, following successful launch of the joint capacity-building project between PALU and the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) in Kigali, Rwanda, in February.

The Cape Town seminar is being jointly organised with the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA), and with the support of the Southern African Development Community Lawyers Association (SADC LA).

It is expected to bring together the top cream of legal practitioners in the Southern region of the continent.

It will focus on: International commercial negotiations and dispute resolution in the sub-region, the scope of international commercial legal practice, financing of infrastructure projects, model mining development agreements, project finance, international arbitration, vulture funds and public debt management.

It will also feature Case Studies on international commercial negotiations and dispute resolution in the sub-region, such as the Zambian Copper Belt Energy Transaction.

The seminar will also provide an opportunity for country delegations from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe to make presentations and share best practices in international commercial law.

PALU Chief Executive Officer Donald Deya said the seminar would also assess the impact of the trainings held so far, and further develop and share both resources and a database of leading lawyers on the continent.(PANA/NAN)
