Abia state university under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Chibuzo Ogbuagu , has pledged to stem the tide of cultism and its attendant forces of terrorism and unrest in state’s citadel of learning.
The VC made the pledge during an address at the 29th matriculation ceremony to mark the 2010/2011 academic session, held at the university pavilion last week.
Emphasizing on the need for the newly admitted students to face the business that brought them to the university, Professor Ogbuagu also urged them to maximize the benefits of the university’s education by maintaining discipline and also abide by the institute’s rules , with a view to promoting order, peace and unity in the campus .
Reminding them that in the country, under twenty percent of those qualified to be in the university had the opportunity to do so, he stated “This fact imposes a responsibility on all of you to seriously and squarely face your studies.
While the university will do its best to meet student’s needs and possible expectations, it will be expected of all of you to maximize the benefits of the university education in its real meaning. We shall also expect you to work hard in order to enhance the much desired and needed high standard of Abia state university”
Stating emphatically that examination malpractice should be avoided in all ramification, the VC
urged the students to settle down to their studies and responsibly adapt to meaningful university life.
Buttressing the VC’s resolve to stem cultism, President of the Student Union Government, comrade Christian Afulike disclosed the arrest of two students who were allegedly caught in activities relating to cultism. The students whose identities he refused to disclose were according to him, intercepted two weeks ago in a secluded bush close to the female hostel C, while initiating some new students into one of the fraternities.
According to him, “our student security outfit, the Man O War who got wind of their activities, launched an attack against them and arrested two persons. We all know that the VC is against such and he has put measures on ground to ensure that such activities within the campus is truncated.
We must all therefore, work together to fight against activities of cultism”
Advising the newly intakes to resist the temptation of being lured, he enjoined them to face the purpose for which they were in school .
