OSOGBO -The embattled Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Rufus Akeju was on Monday quizzed by the Police over alleged assault on the state correspondent of the Leadership Newspaper, Mr. Sefiu Ayanbimpe.
The Police, according to sources, was acting on a petition written by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.
Ayanbimpe who was working on a petition by the state chapter of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP over N25million bribery allegation against Akeju was invited to the office of the REC along Gbongan/Ibadan road by Akeju himself where the journalist was assaulted by Mr Akeju in the presence of some senior officials of the commission.
The Police acting on the petition by the NUJ was said to have invited Akeju to the State Intelligence and Investigations Bureau, SIIB, to explain his role in the allegation of public assault leveled against him by the NUJ.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Olusegun Solomon had earlier invited some executive members of the NUJ to his office over the matter with a view to resolving it amicably but realized that the allegation was weighty and criminal in nature, thus referred it to the SIIB for investigation.
On Monday, a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo restrained the INEC from using Akeju in the conduct and supervision of the general elections in the state.
