Edo State Comrade Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has decided to retain the national U-23 football team in Benin City, following their superlative performance at the weekend in their Olympic qualifier against Equatorial Guinea. The team defeated their counterparts 5-0.
Oshiomhole, who introduced new dance steps to football at the weekend, each time the national team scored, said it was part of the plan to rediscover trueNigerian dominance in not only Africa but global football.
The governor also told reporters that he believes with the quality of play he saw last Saturday, the Olympic team was good enough for the gold medal come London 2012. Sports Commissioner, Anita Evbuonwan, who confirmed the development said the governor, has now more than proven that the state is working in all ramifications.
On his part a visibly joyous national U23 Coach Austin ‘Cerezo’ Eguavoen told reporters that his team have gotten used to the convivial atmosphere in Benin City and there was no going back. “The Comrade Governor has been wonderful, the Oba of Benin City as you all know gave us royal blessings and the fans trooped out en mass to cheer us to victory, so what more can a team ask for?. We’re happy that we are remaining in the city to prepare for our next encounters and possibly play more games here”, he said.
On his part, Edo FA Chairman, Chief Abel Ehigie, said the game against Equatorial Guinea, was just a learning process for the new Edo FA board and he believes that soon the state FA will attract the Super Eagles to the city.
We’re still growing and soon, the world will know that the Edo FA of today is one destined to change the face of football not only in the state but in Nigeria as a whole.
