Lagos doctors suspend strike

Barely seven weeks after healthcare services were paralyzed in public hospitals in Lagos State over non implementation of the controversial Consolidated Salary Structure (CONMESS} , Lagos Doctors , Saturday, suspended its indefinite strike.

Addressing a press conference shortly after its congress, the Chairman of Medical Guild, the body of doctors under the employment of Lagos State, Dr Williams Ayobode announced that work will resume Monday fully at 8 am.

Ayobode said the strike is being suspended after the intervention of the former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other well meaning Lagosians including the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide dris, Lagos State head of Service Adesegun Ogunlewe and The National President of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA( , Dr. Omede Idris.

He said that Government had already documented the agreement, which include the full implementation of CONMESS, Reinstatement of past Chairman of the Medical Guild, Dr Ibrahim Olaifa and had promised to address the issue of tax.

“We have decided to double our efforts to make sure that the citizens of Lagos State continue to receive good health.”

On how they will cope without the nurses on duty, he said “What is important is that doctors are resuming duty and we will work with whatever that is available to us to provide healthcare.

He appealed to the general public and those who have suffered one loss or the other as a result of the strike to bear with them.  He expressed the hope that there will not be a repeat of such strike and expects that the Lagos State government would implement CONMESS fully from March, 2011 as agreed.
