Head of service, Prof Oladapo Afolabi, has identified positive development of the environment as the key to acheiving the 7th goal of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Head of Service, stated this at the Roundtable session on ensuring environmental sustainability in Nigeria during the 27th Annual National Scientific Conference and General meeting held in Abuja with the theme“ The millennium Development Goals the Journey so far and challenges ahead”.
According to him, “there is need the for the country to mainstream the issue of the environment into its national development agenda.” Prof. Afolabi who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Science and Technology; Dr. Dere Awosika, said that an effective regulation and compliance is vital in ensuring effective enforcement of environmental laws across the country.
Afolabi used the occasion to commend the National Environmental Standard Regulation and Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on its effort in ensuring that Nigeria becomes conscious of its environment through adequate regulations and enforcement. He identified the problem of the environment as being multiple problems, calling on the agency to work more on the sensitization of the general public on the issues that affects the environment and its conservation. “Environment issues are global issues that cannot be solved it at once, we to collaborate with other stakeholders to achieve more.”he said.
He urged Nigerians to be conscious of its environment and work towards its sustainability by ensuring a clean environment. Dr Ngeri Benebo, Director-General, NESREA, said Nigeria needs to take urgent steps for accelerated intervention in critical environmental issues in order to facilitate the transition to a sustainable future.
