What could have led an 80 year old landlady and her grand daughter to set the room of their tenant ablaze? This is the mystery that an Ebute Metta Magistrate Court presided over by Mrs. J. Ugbomoiko is trying to unravel.
Already, the court has ordered that the octogenarian, Mrs Oyebo Iyaro and her grand daughter
Taiye Ajeisi be remanded in prison custody for allegedly causing the death of their tenant Adeshina Rasheed and his six months old son.
The accused persons allegedly committed the act by setting fire on the ceiling of their tenant’s apartment at about 1.00 am, which burnt them to death.
Vanguard Homes & Property was told that it was only the one room apartment of the deceased
that was gutted by fire in a tenement building that has 10 rooms.. Our reporter learnt that the landlady and her grand daughter had earlier fought with the late tenant’s wife and the case was
settled at a police station in the area, where they were told to maintain the peace.
The accused persons were arraigned before the court on a four count charge of conspiracy, arson and murder, by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Lagos state.
The Magistrate presiding over the matter, Mrs. Ugbomoiko ordered that they should be remanded in prison custody, pending the outcome of the advice by Directorate of Public Prosecution.
The duo had earlier pleaded not guilty although their plea was not taken. The matter has been
adjourned till 29 April, 2011.
