JOHANNESBURG – South African police said they have discovered eight mobile phones in Henry Okah’s jail cell in a raid carried out this week.
Police spokesman McIntosh Polela said jail officials raided Henry Okah’s cell earlier this week after police heard he was making unauthorised calls. Polela said, yesterday, that officials confiscated eight phones and other unspecified items.
Polela said prisoners are not allowed cell phones, adding that police do not want Okah to communicate with people outside jail because the investigation is at a “sensitive stage.”
Okah is awaiting trial after being arrested in Johannesburg and linked to deadly bombings in Nigeria’s capital during October independence celebrations.
Okah has denied involvement in calls from jail to The Associated Press and other news organizations.
