Jonathan’s promise on 2nd term, a fluke – Ribadu

BY EMMA OVUAKPORIE
Abuja—Media team of the presidential flagbearer of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Malam Nuhu Ribadu yesterday asked Nigerians to disregard President Goodluck Jonathan’s promise that he would not seek for a second term after 2015.

Reacting to a statement credited to President Jonathan that he would not go for a second term in 2015, the team observed that Jonathan’s antecedents demonstrated that he could not be trusted since he had reneged on several earlier promises which he made.

The Media team to the ACN flagbearer reminded Nigerians that Jonathan was a signatory to the Peoples Democratic Party’s agreement on zoning but later denied knowledge of such an agreement.

It could be recalled that Jonathan was a signatory  on the list of attendance at that historic meeting, only to turn round and flatly deny such an agreement.

It stated: “If the president could deny an important document of that magnitude, how can we trust him on this verbal political statement?

“We also recall with painful nostalgia how Jonathan had promised Nigerians that he would fix the power sector but that almost a year after he made the promise, Nigerians are yet to notice any appreciable improvement in power supply. It is like we are achieving no step forward, but several steps backwards.”

Observing the security situation in the country, the team opined that Jonathan had only been making more statements without any corresponding action on how the problems could be tackled, stressing that this had gone a long way to show that the government was at a crossroad on how to move the country forward.

“Instead of prompt response to this dangerous trend with the capacity to truncate our hard earned democracy, the situation is getting worse, with religious, ethnic and political assassinations becoming a recurring decimal.

“We feel that the security situation is becoming embarrassing and precarious, with an urgent call on the government to take pragmatic steps to check further deterioration,” the team stated.

To this end, the team called on all men and women of conscience in the country to seize the opportunity of the forthcoming elections to vote Jonathan out of office and allow the younger generation to form government that would deliver dividend of democracy.
Ribadu promised Nigerians of transforming the country into a safe haven where all and sundry would live in peace and harmony.
