PORT HARCOURT — A policeman and two other staff of a firm in Port Harcourt, reportedly lost their lives, yesterday, on Trans Amadi Road, when gunmen attacked a vehicle conveying huge sums of money for the firm.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Dr Rita Inoma Abbey, who confirmed the development, said details were hazy. Meanwhile, a security source told the Vanguard, that the Police was not aware of the plan to move such cash by the firm. Continuing, the source said the policeman, who lost his life in the attack was not on escort duty.
Eye witness accounts said the robbers laid ambush for the company’s vehicle and as soon as they sighted it, they opened fire, killing the driver, the policeman and a staff of the firm on the spot before disappearing with the cash. The exact amount the robbers fled with could not be confirmed but unofficial source said it was within the range of N50million.
Pointing at Nwanja Junction on Trans Amadi Road where the sad incident occurred, one of the eye witnesses said the gunmen shot sporadically to wade of intrusion from passers bye.
It will be recalled that the firm in almost similar circumstance allegedly lost huge sums of money around Artillery area of the state capital last year . Its vehicle conveying cash was reportedly attacked and some persons killed before the robbers fled with the cash in the vehicle.
