Johannesburg- South African icon Nelson Mandela was on Wednesday admitted at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg for what his foundation called “routine tests”.
The Southern Africa correspondent reports that the news heightened fears about the condition of Mandela but the foundation, in a statement, insisted that he“ is in no danger and in good sprits”.
The 92- year -old icon, who has rarely appeared in public on account of his age, appeared last during the closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in July 2010.
Reports have it that security around the Milpark Hospital was tight on Wednesday.
Last week rumours on a social network site that the icon was dead were condemned in the country with the ANC, saying “ it is people without a soul who would spread lies about former President Nelson Mandela being dead, while he is still alive”.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation had also condemned the rumours saying the former statesman was well and on holiday with his wife Graça Machel at the time the rumours were flying.(NAN)
