Ado-Ekiti—The four industrial unions of the University of Ado Ekiti UNAD have accused the Action Congress of Nigeria government led by Dr Kayode Fayemi of dis- respecting the university’s autonomy,even as they condemned alleged state government introduction of outrageous tax regime for the university workers
The unions operating under the aegis of the joint Action Committee of the university at a briefing in Ado Ekiti yesterday , argued that the Fayemi’s regime had failed to respect the university’s autonomy by sending some government officials to commence the compilation of names of staffers of the university for auditing.
The four unions; the Academic Staff Union of Universitie, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, National Association of Technologists, NAAT and Non Academic Staff Union, NASU, pointed out that the state governmentwhich is the proprietor of the university ought to be relating with the day-to- day administration of the university through the Governing Council.
Speaking on behalf of others, the chairman of the UNAD ASUU,Dr Ayan Adeleke, said some officials of the state government invaded the university and started compiling names of members of staff.
The unions further called on the state government to increase the university monthly subvention,noting that the reduction of tuition fees by the state government would adversely affects the Internally Generated Revenue of the institution
‘’ We are not against the reduction of school fees by the state government, but government must increase the monthly subvention to the university
According to the union officials, the wage bill of the university stand at about N284 million on monthly basis, while the state government just release the some of N150million on monthly basis
But the state government through the Senior Special Assistant [SSA] on Media to the governor, Mr Mojeed Jamiu in a reaction said the state government as the proprietor of the university has a right to know what is going on in the university with a view of proffering solution to it
Jamiu said the meeting of the Visitor to the university, Dr Fayemi and the management had led to the reduction of the school fee, saying it was not unilaterally done by the state government.
