A Portharcourt based Journalist, Mr Celestine Ogolo, an Umuahia based business man, Chief Godwin Adiele, and four others, Malam Y. A. Rufai from Katsina state, Daniel Olawunmi, from Kano, Kola Lesaodo from Jos and Yaya Musibau; a hotelier from Ikare, Ondo State, moved up the ladder and became millionaires last week as Second National Operator, Globacom presented first cheques to first batch of winners in the season 2 of its Text4millions promotion.
The six winners who emerged from the daily draws made in the promotion received their prizes of N1 million each at a special presentation ceremony held at the Mike Adenuga Towers , Globacom’s corporate headquarters in Lagos .
Addressing the audience before the cheque presentation, a N2m winner in the season1 edition of the promo, Mr Femi Olanrewaju Johnson, was to wet the appetite of the new winners and perhaps tip them off on how the winning money could be usefully applied.
He said: “Winning in the text4millions promo was a turn around for my life. Immediately I got my winning money, I bought some sewing machines for my wife who is a fashion designer. I also bought a plot of land and I’m currently building on it. You can see I am on the next level now. I wish from today you would join me” he quipped.
For the new set of winners, the first to be drawn in Season 2 of the promo, it was an occasion for joy as they narrated their various situations and experiences when they were told that they had won.
Mr Celestine Okolo is a General Manager at the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation. For him, it was a surprise that he won even though he confessed to have started sending texts the same day he was the promo was flagged off. “I actually saw the advert in the newspapers on Monday. Knowing that Glo is a responsible company, I started texting and by evening of the same day, I got a call. It shows things can be done properly and I am happy to be associated with Glo”
For Chief Godwill Adiele, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Abia State civil service who now runs an estate development company, participating in Season 2 of the Glo “text4millions” promo, despite initial doubts has turned out to be a very pleasant and rewarding experience.
“Winning in this promo has been a very wonderful experience, very exciting. I decided to try my luck in the promo and my friend confirmed that 555 cannot be a fake number. So I participated in spite of initial doubts.
I thank Glo for this exercise, they are not just helping Nigerians to communicate, Glo is also improving the economy”, he stated. A teacher and director of a private school in Katsina, Mallam Yahaya Rufai did not waste time in participating when he saw the promo commercial on television.
“I saw the advert on television. Immediately I started texting “WIN” to 555 because I know Glo is a wonderful network”
Daniel Olawunmi, a Kano based businessman who specialises in the supply of aluminium roofing and windows was not only happy that he had won, but is a man who is very proud of his status as a Glo subscriber.
Having bought his Glo line since the inception of the company in 2003, Olawunmi says his win has moved him from the brink of bankruptcy back into the warm embrace of prosperity.
“I’ve always been a believer in Glo. I bough my SIM card right from the beginning when Glo started operations. I have been playing in Glo promos but have never been lucky enough to win. I started this time by using the N1,000 I had on me to play. That day, I had a lot of problems with my car which broke down several times.
I had to go and borrow N18,000 to fix the car that day. In total, I spent only N6,000 before I got a call from Glo that I had won. I can now easily repay the money I borrowed to fix the car and buy a fresh plot of land since the person from whom I bought my initial land is trying to resell it to me for N800,000.
Meanwhile, Kola Lesaodo, who is Customer Service Manager for Nigerian German Chemicals in the North East said his luck was mainly derived from his company’s wise decision to give phones to all its employees and put them in the special and affordable Glo Closed User Group (CUG).
“I want to thank my company that gave us Glo lines under a Closed User Group (CUG) arrangement two months ago. When I saw the ad, I said this is my time. I am grateful to Glo for making me a millionaire!”
In his own contribution, Yaya Musbau, Manager of Rockinson Hotel in Ikare, Ondo State said he did not believe he had actually won until a few moments before the presentation ceremony kicked off. “It is very miraculous. I did not believe it initially. It was when I got to Glo and was given a t-shirt to wear that I called my people to say it is true o, I have won!”
Also speaking at the event, Globacom’s Group COO, Mr. Mohamed Jameel expressed delight that the first set of winners have emerged in the draws made during the first few days of the promo. He said Globacom will keep to its promise of creating two millionaires daily out of existing and new subscribers on the Glo network.
Jameel explained that the promo which began about a week ago has been warmly embraced by subscribers on the Glo network. He said the response and participation so far is indicative of the positive acceptance of the promo by Nigerians.
