Samsung Electronics West Africa (SEWA), a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., last week in Lagos announced winners of the inaugural application developers challenge tagged “Samsung Apps Development Contest” at an impressive reveal-dinner event held at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Lagos.
Messrs Fansconnect Limited, with the Productivity/ Tools entry emerged the overall winner. They carted away the coveted N1million (One Million Naira) grand prize, with a total vote of 1,254 votes out of 4,292 votes that voted for the 18 most outstanding applications received in the Samsung Apps Developers Challenge final stage with Naija places as the winning application.
The first runner-up, Messrs RZAARTZ in the Games; Casual Puzzle Category received N500, 000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) for their effort on the Sudoku Xpro entry, while the second runner-up, Messrs TECHBOSS MB in the Education/Reference category, received N250, 000 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) for the Prudent apps entry.
Presenting the cheques to the winners before distinguished IT professionals and tech enthusiasts, Director HHP, Samsung Electronics West Africa, Fady Khatib reiterated that the Samsung Apps Development Contest is borne out of the recognition that indigenous talents must be developed and harnessed for growth.
The contest is Samsung Electronics West Africa initiative that is designed to motivate and reward young Nigerians who can develop innovative, creative, functional and original applications which can be adopted for home market thus answering Federal Government’s desire for more local content.
The Samsung Apps Developers’ Contest was opened to applications that were not publicly available in the market prior to the beginning of the contest. Entries were received in seven categories: Education/Reference; Games: Casual/Puzzle; Games: Arcade/Action; Social Networking + Lifestyle; Productivity/Tools; Entertainment + Media and Miscellaneous. The contest ran from September 27th leading to the grand final event on 25th November 2010.
Qualifying entries were judged by a panel of three software development gurus in mobile devices, telecommunications, software development, technology innovation and data base administration. Chief Technical Officer, Tavia Technologies; Femi George, Group Technical Officer, Mtech Technologies; Olutoyin Daniel Ogunmola and General Manager, Operations, New Horizons Systems Solutions Limited; Sunday Ayandele benchmarked judging criteria on originality of concept, effective use of the Samsung OS, polish and appeal and indispensability of applications.
Other top three entries also received consolation prizes in the first round. The first, second and third place winners in each category received N150, 000 (one hundred and fifty thousand naira), N100, 000 and N50, 000 (fifty thousand naira) respectively.
