Rivers state teenage sensation Solomon Ideriah became the inaugural winner of the Niger Delta Regional “Tiger’ Hunt that was concluded over the weekend at the Air Assault Golf Club in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
“This is the happiest day of my life” says the19 years old who has in the past represented his state at the National Sports Festival. “I am really happy that this event held, and I am hoping to become a professional in the future” he added at the presentation dinner of the event.
Solomon shot 74, two over par gross on the first day and returned on a wet final day to repeat the same score in an incredible performance that was praised by over 100 members of the club.
Engineer Antony Abolarin, the chairman of the organizing committee said the event is a platform he hopes would fuel the ambition of the Niger_Delta youth in the in their pursuit in the game of golf and he said he would working with his team to make sure talents discovered at the event are given more opportunities and the event continued.
“ I must thank all our supporters, especially the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC that bankrolled this first edition and the executive committee members of the Club that hosted the event. We are looking at not only discovering a potential world class player here, we also have as part of the plans to nurse them to stars God willing” he added.
Dr Princewill Ekanem, the NDDC Director of Sports who represented the Managing Director of the commission, Mr Chibuzor Igwuoha at the event said the commission is impressed at the turn out and the popularity the game is assuming the area and would in the future also partner in a considerable way to sustaining the event and the players discovered.
The event which featured over eighty players from the nine NDDC states was judged over 36 holes and the, Ken Kwasu was 10 shots behind the eventual winner to pick the runner up position. In the girls, category, Sarah Udekwe from Delta State snapped up prize beating her elder sister Monica to the second place
