Ikeja Golf Club in Lagos has unveiled its plans for staging the most prestigious amateur championship on its calendar: the club championship 2010.
The club executive committee led by AWA Ibraheem has said the year’s event would be an improvement on the former and would be teed-off with the lady’s event on Wednesday November 24th at the ten holed course that would parade the best of the club’s female golf players.
The club’s competition Secretary Ebere Onyeyiri believes that, compared to the previous championships, the 2010 proves to be one of the most unpredictable in recent times given the emergence of a lot of good players that the club that has matured through the years.
The Captain corroborated the developments saying: “Definitely there would be favorable who will be chosen based on their performances at past events, but then this year’s event would be featuring some players that have potential of turning the apple cart against the regulars”
“The golf course is in good shape and that has been one of our prime investments during the year along with the new bar that have been relocated to the starting point to ease on-course traffic. I believe all this will come to the aid of the well prepared players”
For three years running, Muyideen Olaitan, has held on to the championship and could be facing his biggest challenge at this year’s edition.
According to the outline of the championship released by the secretary of the club Jibola Awoseyi, next Thursday’s regular kitty would double as auction for the players. The championship proper will be decided over 36 holes from Saturday November 27 to Sunday November 28. Over 200 players will tee for the weeklong event.
