First Baptist Church, Ileteju, Mopa in Kogi State will today come to life as family members of late Chief Sunday Bolorunduro Awoniyi, the Aro of Mopa organizes the third year anniversary church service for him.
Speaking with Vanguard, his son, the Lisa of Mopa, Arc.Yomi Awoniyi who noted that the event which will be low key, is essentially a church service in the late Chief’s church in Mopa, designed to offer prayers for the peaceful repose of their departed father.
According to him, today’s programme will not have the usual celebration of life that took place last year, except for the fact only the family members as well as those in the community will be part of the church service.
Awoniyi stressed that the gathering of sons and daughters of Okun land, friends, political associates of the late Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF as it used to be where lectures will be delivered is slated for the fifth year of the demise of the principled public administrator and very dogged politician, Chief Sunday Awoniyi.
It would be recalled that Chief Awoniyi died in London on the 28th of November 2007 from injuries sustained in a road accident along the Abuja Kaduna expressway. He was buried on the 15th of December in his hometown Mopa.
During his years on earth, it will also be recalled that the Aro of Mopa never joked with what concerned the north little wonder he was made the Chairman of ACF, he steadfastly espoused northern cohesiveness within the context of Nigeria as a united entity.
He was a retired Permanent Secretary and later went into private business and politics in the second Republic.
Late Chief Sunday Bolorunduro Awoniyi will be remembered for his integrity and accountability during his public and private endeavour, just as he exhibited all these in the tradition of the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sarduana of Sokoto having worked with him where the Sarduana later became his mentor.
He got his leadership qualities, diligence, truthfulness, among others from the late Ahmadu Bello.
Late Chief Sunday Awoniyi was also a disciplined administrator and later became a politician of a very rare breed, he was known for his tenacity when it comes to issues of discourse as they affect Nigeria and the north in particular, just as he never pretended as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP when things were not going the way they would have been. For this reason, he was denied the Chairmanship position of the party by the power that being and those who felt he may be too hard for them to handle.
