Community seeks govt’s rescue from alleged JTF siege

By Akpokona Omafuaire
WARRI—THE PEOPLE OF Egbo-Ideh community of Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, have called on the acting Governor, Prince Sam Obi, to come to their rescue, following the horrible and harrowing experience they are suffering, occasioned by the occupation of their community by men of the Joint Task Force, JTF,  in their attempt to clamp down on militant leader,  John Togo, by relocating the JTF out their community.

The community in a letter  to the acting Governor,   by Mr. A. Omoshue, community chairman and Mr. Micah Lucky, Community secretary,, said, “we write to inform you of the recent unfriendly development of holocaust in our community.”

“As you are probably aware of the Federal Government’s directives to clamp down on all militant activities in the Niger Delta, our community, by its location on the bank of the river,  is one of the JTF camping ground.

“As such, the presence and operation of these combat-ready military men in our community in an attempt to erase every trace of militancy on the other side of the river has left the community with nothing short of a traumatic experience of war.”

The community alleged that the socio-economic, religious, moral and academic activities of the community had been crippled, as there were  incidents of stray bullets hitting residents and building roofs from the sporadic gunshots from the cross fire between JTF and suspected militants both night and day.

That many residents have fled the community for fear of being caught in the cross fire and have become refugee in neighbouring communities. Also, that the incident has affected their fishing and farming such that fishing nets, canoes and other equipments have been lost.

They therefore called on the Council Chairman, State and Federal Government to help by sending relief materials to the affected community.
