5 Civil Defence Corps volunteers dismissed for carrying arms

ASABA — FIVE adhoc staff of  the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Delta State, were, yesterday, dismissed for operating with unauthorised fire arms and molesting the staff of the Corps and other members of the public.

Delta State Commandant of the Corps, Mr. Amos Andekin, who made the disclosure in Asaba, yesterday, said the culprits were eight and that the command arrested five of them, while two were picked up by the police and one was at large.

Andekin said they were among those who sealed off the command’s area offices located in Ughelli North and South Local Government Areas of the state, sending the staff packing in protest that they were not formally recruited into the Corps by the Federal Government.

Also yesterday, the Commandant paraded a suspect for allegedly vandalizing NITEL cables with  two other suspects for engaging in illegal bunkering.   According to him “two suspects (names withheld) were arrested on  November 14, 2010 about 23.33hours on their way to Umunede while conveying a Mercedez Benz truck with registration number Delta AM 139 AGB containing 40 drums of 200 litres  of petroleum product.

“They were arrested and their truck impounded for illegal possession of petroleum product (diesel).

And in a related development, another suspect was arrested in Warri South Local Government Area on  November 12, 2010. The suspect (names withheld) was arrested for vandalizing 46,076 metres of NITEL cables. He was caught with a hacksaw knife, one kitchen knife, one overall jacket and insulated glove,” he added.
