Asaba — LEADERSHIP of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Delta State, has vowed to resist any attempt to usurp their powers as 2011 elections approach.
Rising from its meeting at the party secretariat in Asaba, the party in a statement by its State Publicity Secretary, Pastor Jude Obiazukwor, warned that it would resist any attempt “to derail the good work of keeping the party together under the leadership of Chief Sam Egwerome for the past for years”.
Although the party leadership did not specifically mention where the usurpation of authority was coming from, but political observers believe that it might not be connected with the recent decamping of a governorship aspirant, Ovie Omo-Agege, from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to ACN.
According to the statement, “you are probably aware of the high current political activities in our party, ACN, Delta State chapter for the past three to four weeks.
This can only happen where there is value placed on a political party and we are not unmindful of the interest of Detlans to joining ACN since the doors are widely open to all interest groups and individuals
“The development”, the statement went on “has thrown up some challenges where some cabal in the leadership of our party constituted themselves and tired to derail the good work of keeping the party together under the leadership of Chief Sam Egwerome for the past four years.
“Their attempt to truncate the effort of the leadership of our party in Delta State will not survive especially as some of our great leaders believed that as a party that maintains the slogan and believes in democracy this cabal must be resisted and we have taken a stand to work tenaciously as a party that cannot be channeled through the gutters.
“We therefore call on all party loyalists all over the state to remain calm but steadfast in the drive to effect positive change in the 2011 elections where a high number of aspirants have indicated their interests to run for the State House of Assembly as well as National Assembly”.
It added that a technical committee has been set up “to drive the party through congresses in the state”.
